In a significant stride towards academic excellence and growth, the Federal University Lokoja, (FUL) has started receiving the National Universities Commission's (NUC) accreditation teams for the assessment and re-accreditation of many of its programmes. All the academic programmes in the Faculty of Science are due for re-accreditation, while the new programmes established in 2019 are also undergoing their first accreditation.

Led by Professor Yahaya Y. Amuda, the first accreditation team arrived on November 16, 2023, ready to delve into the University's academic framework. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, warmly welcomed members of the team to the University and expressed gratitude to God for their safe arrival. He noted that the accreditation exercise would enhance the academic programmes and ensure the standardization of their operations in the Departments.

The Vice-Chancellor assured the team of the University's preparedness, outlining measures undertaken by his administration to ensure consistent growth and development. He particularly noted that the University had achieved the prestigious status of an Elite Institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, and pledged his unwavering commitment to meeting the NUC's minimum benchmark for accreditation across all the various programmes.

Furthermore, Professor Akinwumi urged the accreditation team to adopt a critical approach in carrying out the assignment and consider the financial constraints impacting negatively on the educational system. He equally emphasized the challenges faced in attracting funds for the development of the University, underscoring his administration's commitment to overcoming these hurdles.

Professor Amuda-led team and other groups that came after, wasted no time in commencing their assignment as they swung into action immediately to interrogate the various programmes scheduled for accreditation and re-accreditation.

During the debriefing held with the University Management and relevant stakeholders by each group before departure, the need for continuous self-evaluation and consistent improvement of the programmes to maintain the highest academic standard was chiefly discussed, amongst other pertinent issues.

The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the efforts and cooperation of all the relevant stakeholders, including members of Management, Director of Academic Planning, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, Staff, and Students, who have worked tirelessly, for ensuring the smooth conduct of the exercise. He also thanked the accreditation teams for their professionalism, criticisms, and valuable suggestions on each programme for the benefit of the University.

As the accreditation exercise continues and the University plays host to more teams from the NUC, Management is optimistic that FUL will satisfy the requirements and hopeful that the outcome of the important exercise will be positive for the advancement of the Institution. It will also reposition her as a citadel of higher learning in the region known for quality education and academic excellence. See more pictures here
